Pill and "Portzed"


This quintessential character continued into Pill, where the Avon has rejoined us, and a station signal box indelibly part of the scene. Pill is a name proudly and traditionally associated with generations of Bristol Channel pilots.  Then, on past Portbury (original destination of the railway) to "PortZed" (Bristolianese for "Portishead")

The Bristolian might view "PortZed" as a smaller attraction than "Wessun" (Weston - super - Mare"), but easier to get to, and a popular dormitory town. The post - war station's newness had hardly worn off when closure came, in 1964.
